There were no life signs inside the boat, police said. The 65-foot Danube-brand vessel had left its home port of the Italian city of Trieste at around 5pm on Friday and was sailing north to the port city of Genoa. The Ontario Medical Association's new leader is unlikely to change the way the group chooses its president.
Dr. Danielle Martin, who took over as OMA president on Wednesday, told the Star that in the past, physicians nominated for the position of president were usually retired physicians.
"The next OMA president should be a physician leader with the ability to articulate the concerns of the medical profession in society," she said in a statement.
"The OMA should continue its role of representing all physicians and providing its own professional leadership, while also reaching out to other health groups, including hospitals, nurses, public health and members of the public."
The 64-year-old, who lives in Mississauga, Ont., is a family physician.
Martin's predecessor, Dr. George Foulkes, is a retired professor who served as a vice-president with the OMA.
She succeeds him and former vice-president, Dr. Fred Bercow, who stepped down last fall after seven years as president. Bercow, a retired thoracic surgeon from Toronto, would have been the first physician to be elected OMA president.
Bercow told the Star he was delighted by the positive reaction he received while running. He said that OMA members' positive feelings were one of the reasons he decided to accept the position.
But he admitted he was less enthused by the role than he expected to be.
"This role is much more of a public role and I hadn't anticipated that," Bercow said. "I know I can run and I know I can work well in a public role. But I'm at a stage of my life now where I have retired from the medical profession. I
